Introduction of Digital Visas
Pakistani nationals can now apply for the UK’s e-visa system. Effective today, 15th July, most holders of UK study and work visas will no longer require a physical visa sticker (“vignette”) in their passports. This change signifies that the British Government has transitioned its visa system to a fully digital format, extending this modernization to Pakistani applicants.

What is an E-Visa?
An e-visa is a secure online record of your UK immigration status, linked directly to your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This digital approach enhances security, reduces processing delays, and simplifies how you prove your right to study or work in the UK. Importantly, your e-visa status is tied to the specific passport used in your application.
Eligible Visa Categories
The e-visa system applies to individuals under the following UK visa categories:
- Students (including Short-Term Study)
- Skilled Workers
- Global Talent
- Business Mobility
- Temporary Work Schemes
- Youth Mobility Scheme

Key Benefits of the E-Visa System
- Simplified Travel: Linking your passport to your UKVI account enables smoother border crossings.
- Easy Status Verification: You can securely share your visa status online with employers, landlords (for rental checks), or other authorized entities via the UKVI View & Prove service – eliminating the need to carry or share physical documents.
- Reduced Risk: Digital visas minimize the risk of loss, damage, or theft associated with physical passport stickers.
Important Exceptions
- Physical Stickers Still Required: Dependents of visa holders and applicants for UK visitor visas will continue to receive physical visa stickers.
- Existing Visa Holders: If you already have a valid UK visa in the form of a physical sticker in your passport, no action is required. Your current visa remains valid until its expiry date. You will transition to the e-visa system automatically when you next apply for a UK visa.
Preparing for Travel
While the e-visa is digital, you must carry the passport linked to your UKVI account when traveling to the UK. Border Force officers will verify your status electronically using this passport. Ensure your contact details in your UKVI account are always up-to-date.
