Work Permit Announcement for 2024

The German government has announced 1,774,000 work permits for 2024. This is a staggering number. If we compare the past 5 years. 97000 in 2021, 152000 in 2022, 1,58,000 in 2023, and now 12000 in 2024, that is, if we look at 2021. And now in 2024, there has been a 77% increase in work visas by the German Government.

Reasons Behind the Increase in Work Visas

One of the biggest reasons for this is that Germany announced modernized and relaxed immigration policies in 2023. When skilled worker visas were issued separately, it was modernized. Apart from this, another announcement regarding the Opportunity Card was made in June 2024. Another announcement added to this was that in June 2024, people who have lived legally in Germany for only 5 years will be allowed to apply for dual nationality. After this, there was a further increase in numbers.

Sources of Foreign Workers

German newspaper SaaPude and also Welt Amazon Talk SaaPude have confirmed that the number of visas increased last year because the German government needs a large number of foreign workers from non-European countries. According to the IW report, 62% of German employment growth from 2022 to 2023 was driven by foreign workers from non-EU countries, with only 14% coming from German workers. If we look at the figures from 2019 to 2023, most of the people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia have managed to get work visas for Germany. Apart from this, a large number of foreign workers from India and Kosovo have also been successful in obtaining a German work visa. Especially, AU Blue Card or IT specialists from India have reached Germany in very large numbers.

Future Outlook and Immigration Policies

Friends, Germany’s work visa situation will probably continue in the same way in 2025 as it was in 2024. Of course, the government has changed, and they are trying to increase legal migration. Illegal migration should be reduced. In this way, there is a good chance that new immigration policies will come into force. Only time will tell whether there will be leniency or more strictness. But Germany’s population is shrinking, and it has a desperate need for skilled workers on a large scale.
