Abolishment of Germany’s 3-Year Citizenship Law
In less than a year, a citizenship law that was so loved by the people has been abolished. Yes friends, it has been announced to abolish Germany’s 3-year citizenship law which was amended in June 2024. A law that was attracting a lot of people. Many foreign workers from all over the world were deciding to go to Germany and live and work so that they could benefit from this nationality law after 3 years. But unfortunately it has been announced that this law will be abolished.
New Government Coalition Agreement
They have signed a new agreement of 144 seats with the new elected government of Germany which will consist of CDU, CSU and SPD. Which also includes new lessons on immigration. In which the most important lesson is about the nationalization process or the three-year old citizenship law. This is also called the Turbo Naturalization Process and is now being phased out. This means that German nationality will not be possible after 3 years.
Phasing Out the Turbo Naturalization Process
In less than a year, this law is being announced to be abolished. Yes, such people who have shifted to Germany will acquire German nationality after living here for 3 years. Now this will not be possible.
Previous Requirements Under the 3-Year Law
What happened was that on 24th June 2000, it was announced that people who have been living in Germany for 3 years and they show their integration at C1 language level or apart from this through extraordinary professional or academic levels, they can get German nationality even after 3 years which is the shortest time period to avail nationality for such a big country but now the government has said that this is a very short time and the new government is going to end it.
Remaining 5-Year Naturalization Process
However, other laws that reduced the time period for applying for German nationality, citizenship, and naturalization from 8 years to 5 years will remain the same. That means after living in Germany for 5 years, German nationality can still be obtained by attaining a B1 language level, which is still possible in much less time and with fewer requirements compared to other countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, etc.
Dual Nationality Provisions
Apart from this, dual nationality will also be possible. This means that having citizenship of two countries will be possible if your own country also allows it.
Revocation of Citizenship for Extremist Activities
Apart from this, cancelling the nationality of such people who have been involved in various extremist activities in rallies or other such things and similarly they have been active against some such countries which Germany considers its friends, for them also it was said that their German nationality will be cancelled or revoked but now no further explanation has been given about it because it is a part of German law that nationality cannot be taken away from any person and it will happen in very rare cases. That too, for those people who are engaged in extremely expensive activities. Even if he has dual German nationality, it is possible that his German nationality can be cancelled, which will not be easy even in this case, because the norm in Germany is not to take away a person’s nationality.
